Belonging: Aboriginal Connections & Reconciliation

The Western Sydney Regional Reconciliation Network is hosting a free public event at the Parramatta Town Hall on Thursday 28th June from 3.30pm-8.00pm.

The event is aimed at strengthening engagement to achieve justice for Aboriginal people, build more understanding for identity and belonging and grow our relationships with each other.

Every individual and organisation in our Western Sydney neighborhoods has much to contribute to this journey and to the afternoon. There will be performances and presentations, group discussions and celebration, followed by a feast of Aboriginal finger-food.

My Suburb, My Community photography exhibition

‘My Suburb, My Community’ is a photographic exhibition, part of the Head On Photography Festival, that explores the issues facing the western Sydney suburb of Kingswood as documented by young people.

Project Manager Mandy Schöne-Salter provided Kingswood High School students with a camera and tuition and gave them the task to take a series of photographs of their suburb and members of their community. The resulting images form a powerful portrait of a community struggling with the challenges of multiculturalism, a declining jobs market and bored youth, while still managing to retain hope and a sense of pride in this place.

Mandy hopes the project will empower local youth by encouraging awareness of their surrounding environment and more active involvement within their own community.

The exhibition is being held at Kingswood railway station so that all community members and leaders will be able to learn about the realities for local youth and be motivated to make changes towards a better Kingswood.

This project is funded by Penrith City Council’s Neighbourhood Renewal Grant 2012; called ‘Magnetic Places’ and supported by RailCorp.

2012 Local Council Election Kit now available

The 2012 Local Council Election Kit has been developed to help inform and engage people in the election process. The Election kit provides links to information about enrolling to vote, how to vote, finding out the policy platform of your local candidates, how to become a candidate yourself, organising a meet the candidate session, important dates and a range of other relevant information.

The Stronger Voice for Western Sydney (SV4GWS) partnership, between Western Sydney Community Forum, WESTIR and TRI Community Exchange, was created to promote a positive image of Western Sydney through highlighting our assets, our diversity and the creative and innovative community sector work that originates here.

The aim of SV4GWS is to build a positive image of Western Sydney as an engaged civil society and have a coalition of strong community organisations in Western Sydney.  We work with community organisations across Greater Western Sydney, developing strategies that resource the sector to implement social justice and participation amongst Western Sydney’s 2.4 million residents.

The 2012 Local Council Election Kit has been developed as a specific resource to meet the aims of Stronger Voice for Greater Western Sydney. Other initiatives include the ZEST Awards which acknowledge Community Sector agencies, groups and individuals who have shown Zest, Enthusiasm, Strength and Tenacity in community activities in Western Sydney.
